Roofing and siding in Center Grove, Indiana
Center Grove is not a city. It is White River Township in Johnson County, named for its school district, with a few edges that fall inside Greenwood or Bargersville. We roof, side and replace windows across all of it.
June 25, 2023
The afternoon a tornado came through the township.
The National Weather Service rated it an EF-2, with peak winds estimated at 115 mph along a 5.4-mile path that started just west of Travis and Mullinix roads. Its survey says the tornado went through parts of the Kensington Grove subdivision "with substantial roof damage to some homes." A report that afternoon described "heavily damaged roofs off Stones Crossing Road in the Kensington Grove Neighborhood."
That storm is why so many Center Grove owners know the insurance claim process already. It is also why we tell people to look again at roofs that were "fine" afterward: a roof can lose its seal in high wind and not leak until the next hard rain.
- Bricks blown off a large house and a trailer moved, per the NWS survey of the same tornado
- June 29, 2023: a derecho brought a large tree and power lines down in Bargersville
- May 7, 2024: storm winds downed trees along Fairview Road west of Greenwood, with fence and roof damage
- June 11, 2026: a 30-foot tree branch down across Peterman Road, west of Greenwood
The houses out here
White River Township had about 52,000 residents in 2020 across 47 square miles. Most of its homes are younger than the ones we see in Marion County.
Median build year 1995
Half the township's houses were built before 1995. The original shingles on those homes are at or past the 30 years a home inspectors' chart gives architectural roofs, and 3-tab roofs from then are well past their 20.
Census ACS 2020 to 2024; InterNACHI chartBargersville: 2005
Bargersville, which spans White River and Union townships, grew 138% between 2010 and 2020, to about 9,560 people. Its median house was built in 2005, so first roofs and first gutter jobs are just coming due.
Census 2020; Census ACSA school district, not a town
The name comes from Center Grove Community School Corporation: Center Grove, Maple Grove, North Grove, Pleasant Grove and Sugar Grove elementaries, two middle schools and Center Grove High School. Most Bargersville families attend them too.
White River Township and Bargersville recordsJohnson County permits
Because most of Center Grove is unincorporated, permits come from the Johnson County Department of Planning and Zoning, not a city hall. The county adopts the state building rules with no local amendments, and a building permit review averages about ten business days.
Windows need a permit
This one surprises people. Citing the energy code, Johnson County requires a permit for every window replacement, even a same-size swap. We build that into the schedule for any window job in the township.
Roofs: we confirm first
The county's published pages do not say whether a straight reroof needs a permit, so we check with Johnson County Planning (317-346-4350) before the job. And because some Center Grove addresses sit inside Greenwood or Bargersville, we look up which office your house belongs to on the county's map first.

Center Grove questions
If it was never inspected, yes. Wind can break the seal on shingles without tearing them off, and the damage shows up later as leaks. We will get on the roof and photograph what we find.
Johnson County Planning and Zoning requires one for all window replacements under the energy code. Inside Greenwood's city limits, a same-size replacement does not need one, so the address matters.
Yes. Bargersville and the Center Grove area share schools and a lot of the same housing, and we take roofing, siding and window work in both.
