New roof builds in Indianapolis

A roof where there was not one before: over a room addition, a new garage, a porch, or a house going up from the ground. We frame it, sheathe it, tie it into the roof you already have, and shingle it to match.

How this differs from a reroof

A roof replacement puts new shingles on a structure that is already there. A new roof build starts earlier: the rafters or trusses, the sheathing, the fascia and the overhangs all have to be built before a single shingle goes on. It is the roof part of a bigger project, and the part that decides whether the addition looks like it was always there or looks bolted on.

That covers room additions, attached and detached garages, covered porches, and the roof on a gut-and-rebuild. Because we also do the siding, gutters and windows, the new section can be closed in and finished by one crew.

The tie-in is where new roofs leak

The weak spot on almost every addition is the seam where the new roof meets the old one. Get the pitch wrong and the two roofs never line up. Skip the step flashing where the new roof runs into an existing wall and water gets behind the siding. Leave a flat pocket where two slopes meet and it holds snow and water.

We plan the roof line with the rest of the house in mind: matching the existing pitch where the design allows, carrying the valleys through cleanly, and flashing every place the new roof touches a wall or chimney. Where the new roof meets the old shingles, we work the new courses into the old ones so the transition sheds water like one roof.

Built to Indiana's roof rules

  • Design loads. Marion and Johnson counties are listed at a 115 mph design wind speed and a 20 psf ground snow load in Indiana's residential code table. The framing and sheathing are sized for that.
  • Drip edge. The 2020 Indiana Residential Code requires drip edge along the eaves and rakes of shingle roofs, so it goes on every new edge we build.
  • Ice barrier. Along the eaves and up the rakes, wherever the shingle maker's instructions call for it.
  • Permits. A new roof is new construction, not a reroof, so the exemptions that cover some shingle jobs do not apply. Indianapolis, Beech Grove, Greenwood, Franklin and Johnson County each run their own permit office, and we work with the one that covers your address.

Matching the old roof. We install Owens Corning and CertainTeed shingles. If your existing roof is near the end of its life, it is often worth reroofing the whole house while the addition goes on, so everything matches and wears out together. We will price it both ways.
